Frequently asked questions
Do I have to file a Florida state income tax return?
Florida does not impose a personal income tax, so for most Florida residents the federal return is the main filing. If you earned income in another state or country, other filings may apply, and we review that with you.
What is the FBAR and who files it?
The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) reports foreign bank and financial accounts. U.S. persons generally file it when the combined value of their foreign accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time during the year. It is filed electronically with FinCEN, not with the tax return.
Who has to file Form 5471?
Certain U.S. citizens and residents who are officers, directors or shareholders of a foreign corporation. The filing categories depend on ownership percentage and control, and the form is attached to your income tax return by its due date, including extensions.
What are the streamlined procedures?
They are IRS procedures for taxpayers whose failure to report foreign income, accounts or forms was non-willful. They involve amended or late returns, FBARs and a signed certification, and they are not available if the IRS has already opened an examination of your returns.
Can you prepare my return if I live outside the United States?
Yes. We meet by video and exchange documents through the client portal. Under IRS rules, U.S. citizens and residents living abroad on the regular due date get an automatic two-month extension to file.
